…During a one-day excursion by train, on a rare sunshine day in the dream-city of Bruges, Belgium -from Brussels, where I was on a business trip- at the end of a boat ride along the river canals of Bruges, I found myself in an open air flea market… There, I bought my first scale that really amazed me!

After a while, I found in a website, a directory for scale’s collectors, in U.S. (Scales – A Collector’s Guide, written by Bill & Jan Berning, Schiffer Editions). I bought it for 30 dollars, from Amazon. It is worth mentioning that it is quite good: it puts the scales in order, in relation to their type, it shows pictures and a reference to the manufacturer of each scale, time of making, several uses, etc., as well as indicative prices in U.S. dollars.

When I first went through this book, there was a separate brochure advertising the writers’ booth, in an exhibition of vintage items, such as slot machines, scales used for weighing human beings and other machines. The exhibition Chicagoland was scheduled in a hotel outside Chicago IL, at exactly the same period when I was visiting Chicago, representing the company I was working for, in a world conference!!!…

After asking for information from the writers of the book, about how to reach them, I got there by train and then with a “limo” taxi and met them! They were a very nice couple with three children, who met each other, because Bill was a collector of Person Weighing Scales and Jan was a collector of small table Scales. They were surprised that a “collector” like me traveled at the other side of the world from Greece, the country of recession…! Our talk lasted over two hours and in the end they gave me as a gift an issue of EQUILIBRIUM, the magazine that is published by the International Society of Antique Scale Collectors (ISASC) and they signed for me with a dedication on the book that I had with me: Weigh daily! Bill & Jan Berning.

Needless to say, I left with one of my best scales! Since then, nearly in every trip, I do not avoid adding new pieces of scales in my collection.

From then on, the procedure is given: careful cleaning of each scale and then repair and -if needed- restoration, depending on the material (I mainly intervene in wood, sometimes in enamel or iron). Of course, an identification and listing of the scales is necessary, according to my directory or the internet.

Ζυγαριές

…Σε μια ημερήσια εκδρομή με το τρένο -μια σπάνια ηλιόλουστη μέρα- στη μαγευτική παραμυθούπολη Bruges, στο Βέλγιο (από τις Βρυξέλλες που είχα πάει για δουλειά), στο τέλος μιας βόλτας με το καραβάκι στα κανάλια του ποταμού που διατρέχει τη πόλη, βρέθηκα σ’ ένα υπαίθριο παζάρι… Εκεί, αγόρασα τη πρώτη μου ζυγαριά, που με γοήτεψε πραγματικά!

Βρήκα τότε στο διαδίκτυο, έναν οδηγό για συλλέκτες ζυγαριών, στην Αμερική: (Scales – A Collector’s Guide, των Bill & Jan Berning, εκδόσεις Schiffer) και τον αγόρασα για 30 δολάρια, από το Amazon. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι είναι αρκετά καλός: κατατάσσει τις ζυγαριές σε κατηγορίες, ανάλογα με τον τύπο τους, ενώ για κάθε μια έχει φωτογραφία και γράφει κατασκευαστή, χρονολογίες κατασκευής, χρήσεις, κ.ά., καθώς και ενδεικτικές τιμές, σε δολάρια Η.Π.Α.

Όταν τον πρωτο-ξεφύλλισα (καλοκαίρι του 2011), είχε μέσα ένα ένθετο φυλλάδιο, που διαφήμιζε το περίπτερο των συγγραφέων, σε μια έκθεση παλαιών αντικειμένων, όπως «κουλοχέρηδες», ζυγαριές -κυρίως- ανθρώπων και άλλες τέτοιες μηχανές, που θα γινόταν το Νοέμβριο, σε ένα ξενοδοχείο έξω από το Chicago IL, τη Chicagoland 2011, ακριβώς το διάστημα που θα ήμουν και ‘γω στο Chicago, συμμετέχοντας σε ένα παγκόσμιο συνέδριο της εταιρίας μου !!!…

Έτσι, ζήτησα πληροφορίες από τους συγγραφείς του οδηγού (που έχουν κατάστημα με ζυγαριές στη Genoa, IL), για το πως θα πάω… Όταν έφθασα εκεί (60 μίλια με τρένο έξω από το Chicago και στη συνέχεια -ο μόνος τρόπος- με «limo» ταξί!) και τους γνώρισα (ήταν ένα συμπαθέστατο ζευγάρι με τρία παιδιά, που γνωρίστηκαν επειδή ο Bill ήταν συλλέκτης ζυγαριών με κέρμα για ανθρώπους και η Jan συλλέκτρια μικρών, επιτραπέζιων ζυγαριών), εξεπλάγησαν που ένας «συλλέκτης» σαν κι εμένα, έφτασε στην άλλη άκρη, από την Ελλάδα της κρίσης…! Η κουβέντα μας κράτησε πάνω από δύο ώρες και στο τέλος μου χάρισαν ένα τεύχος του περιοδικού EQUILIBRIUM, της Παγκόσμιας Ομοσπονδίας Συλλεκτών Ζυγαριών (International Society of Antique Scale Cllectors, ISASC) και μου υπέγραψαν με αφιέρωση, πάνω στον Οδηγό που είχα μαζί μου: Weigh daily! Bill & Jan Berning. Ζύγιζε καθημερινά!

Περιττό να πώ, ότι έφυγα από κει, με μια από τις καλύτερες ζυγαριές μου! Από τότε, σχεδόν σε κάθε μου ταξίδι, δεν παραλείπω να προσθέτω κομμάτια στη συλλογή μου.

Από κει και πέρα η διαδικασία είναι δεδομένη: ακολουθεί προσεκτικός καθαρισμός (στο κράμα μετάλλου, ή μπρούτζο, ξύλο, κλπ) και μετά επισκευή και τυχόν αποκατάσταση, ανάλογα με το υλικό (κυρίως επεμβαίνω στο ξύλο, κάποτε και σε σμάλτο ή σίδερο) και φυσικά η απαραίτητη ταυτοποίηση και καταγραφή, με βάση τον Οδηγό ή το Internet, σε φύλλο excell, με όλα τα στοιχεία της κάθε ζυγαριάς που αγοράζω, όπως φωτογραφία, τύπος και είδος, χρήσεις, διαστάσεις, αλλά και τα έξοδα που έχω κάνει, είτε για την αγορά ή για την επισκευή της, κ.ά…
